Artist Statement
I am captivated by nature, being Malaysian, we long for snow just like how other’s long for summer. That is why snowy peaks are often the subject of my landscape painting, with a focus on zoomed-in mountain peaks against blue skies. Though I have never seen European mountains until a month ago, they have always intrigued me.
Primarily, I paint with oils on linen, the notion of painting on linen with linseed oil has a certain romance to it (both derived from the same plant). Technical precision matters, as it helps express my feelings accurately. Oils are my meditative medium, the forgiving nature allows me to revisit and refine my work consistently.
I resonate with artists who really know their subjects. Whether it’s plein air painters, photographers or mountain climbers, understanding your subject is key. As a landscape artist, nature is my best teacher - you’ve got to immerse yourself in it to paint it well.
When it comes to showing my work, I don't want to limit it to galleries or art lovers. I envision it being enjoyed anywhere, accompanied by the sounds of nature—a symphony of water or wind in leaves. Ideally, there'd be a bench for people to sit and take it all in.
Sustainability holds great importance for me, and while I haven't determined the exact approach, I am keen to explore ways in which my art can contribute to this goal.
